10th EWACE 2022: CELEBRATING GROWTH AND DIVERSITY

The European Workshop on Applied Cultural Economics (EWACE) returns to northern Italy to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Originally organised by Roberto Zanola (University of Eastern Piedmont) and Antonello Eugenio Scorcu (University of Bologna), this time taking place in Torino University 8 – 10 September 2022. Over 50 presentations, increasingly with multiple authors and with a balanced gender representation, evidence an active, creative, and engaged community of specialized economists worldwide.

TWO INFORMATION AGGREGATION MECHANISMS FOR PREDICTING THE OPENING WEEKEND BOX OFFICE REVENUES OF FILMS

Many entertainment and, more generally, cultural products are characterised by significant levels of uncertainty regarding their ultimate appeal to consumers. This is perhaps no place better observed than in the theatrical film industry, where the famous ‘nobody knows anything’ quote of William Goldman has often been used to support this idea. We present two aggregation mechanisms to predict the opening weekend box office success of films and show they are able to provide useful predictions of box office revenues.
