CONSUMER AND EXPERT REVIEWS EFFECTS ON THE LENGTH OF TIME A FILM IS KEPT ON SCREENS

We evaluate the effect of critical reviews by consumers and experts on a film’s running time at movie theaters in the United States. In addition to the usual expert critics’ reviews, we employ the consumer reviews rating and their affectivity about films as a measure for the consumer influence effect. We find evidence of consumer rating matter in keeping a film running longer at the theaters, but experts’ ratings have a larger influence on the movie market as a whole.

ARTISTS’ SURVIVAL RATE: EDUCATION MATTERS

The literature of cultural economics generally finds that an artistic education has no significant impact on artists’ income and careers in the arts. In our research, we have readdressed this question by looking at the artists’ survival in the arts occupations. The results show that an artistic education has a significant impact on artists’ careers in the arts and we find important industry differences.

THE ARTS CONNECT STUDENTS TO SCHOOL

Student enrollment in public school courses in visual art, music, theatre, and dance is linked to reduced high school dropout even after controlling for observable student and school characteristics expected to influence both arts participation and school commitment. Agencies that support arts education should invest in experimental studies to produce causal evidence about the impact of arts on the student outcomes stakeholders care about.
